ENVIRONMENT AGENCY NEWS RELEASE - Improvements to flood warnings
The Environment Agency is launching improvements to its flood warning service, Flood line Warnings Direct, in Hampshire and Isle of Wight today.
In Hampshire and Isle of Wight there are around 55,000 homes and businesses at risk from flooding either from the sea and rivers. The Environment Agency has an important role in warning people about the risk of flooding, and reducing the likelihood where possible. Floodline Warnings Direct is a service that automatically alerts people to possible flooding from rivers and the sea based on detailed monitoring and forecasting. Each county is split into different flood warning areas.
In Hampshire and Isle of Wight the current 13 coastal flood warning areas are changing to 22smaller, community based areas. These will use tidal forecasts to provide flood warning information that is appropriate for each area along the coast. This will reduce the number of false alarms, as warnings will be better targeted at those who are likely to flood.
Those already signed up to the service will continue to receive flood warnings and will only have to note the new name and Flood line quickdial number of the flood warning area they live in when contacted by the Environment Agency. Those people who live outside of the floodplain, but have asked to receive flood warnings as an ‘Area of Interest’, will simply be asked to confirm which new location they wish to register for.
Nigel Sell, Flood Risk Management Team Leader for Hampshire and Isle of Wight said: “As the recent widespread flooding has shown it’s essential that we provide the best flood warning system as possible so that people are given those vital hours they need to protect their home and belongings. These new, more focused, flood warning areas will provide more accurate warnings of when flooding will occur.”.
“It is important that people find out whether they are at risk of flooding and, if they are, take steps to minimise the impact flooding might have. Flooding can be devastating but by signing up to Floodline Warnings Direct people can get early warnings when flooding is likely. With a bit more time, people are better able to prepare for flooding.”
People can find out if they are at risk from flooding by visiting the Environment Agency website
(www.environment-agency.gov.uk/floodline ) or calling Floodline 0845 988 1188.
Flood Warnings Direct automatically alerts people via a phone call, text message, email or fax.
